FALL 2011 SCHEDULE

September 21                                                          North Shore Collectors
Explore a collection of contemporary paintings, prints and sculpture in a mid-century modern home designed by Loebl Schlossman & Hackl.  Enjoy views of the lake as you approach this North Shore home. Situated on a ravine, it is beautifully landscaped with a naturalistic oval pool integrated into the property.  The thought provoking collection includes edgy Latin American artists Priscilla Monge and Fabian Marcaccio, Americans Dennis Kowalski, Mark Chatterley and Paul Sierra as well as African art and folk art.

October 5                                                          The Mile of Murals Project
Friendship Day:  members may bring a guest who is new to Art Encounter free of charge.

Public art and street art is all the rage.  Find out how it affects a community as we tour the Mile of Murals project and the Glenwood Ave. Arts District sponsored by the Rogers Park Business Alliance.  Explore four block long murals, each with a different theme and artistic approach, with mural project coordinators Lea Pinsky and Dustin Harris. We’ll conclude at the Heartland Café where Alan Goldberg, Founder of the Glenwood Ave. Arts District, will talk to us about how he initiated this project and what it’s done for the community.

October 12                                                              Elyce and Mark Metzner
Enjoy an outstanding collection of art glass, outdoor sculpture and paintings and objects in a beautiful lakeside home.  See glass works by Dale Chihuly, Mark Peiser, Damian Prior, Joel Phillip Meyers, Toots Zinsky, Harvey Littleton and more, paintings by Alex Katz, Larry Rivers, Paul Giovanopoulos, Roger Brown and James Havard;  Otto Decker shirts, sculptures by Margaret Wharton and John O’Kulick as well as outdoor pieces by Woods Davy, John Kearney, Boaz Vaadia and Fred Prescott.

October 19                                                                Madeline Murphy Rabb
Discover the eye of a collector who is an artist, art advisor, curator and jewelry designer in addition to being a trustee of Columbia College Chicago and a long time member of the Woman’s Board of the Art Institute.  Focusing primarily on African-American artists, the eclectic collection includes paintings, sculpture and photography by renowned artists such as Sam Gilliam, Kerry James Marshall, Ed Clark, Richard Hunt, Dawoud Bey and Lorna Simpson as well as artist furniture, folk art and indigenous objects from around the world.

October 26                                                 Artists at the Zhou B. Center
Encounter an extraordinary studio building complete with elegant exhibition and gallery spaces, a cafe and four floors of artists’ studios. It was founded in 2004 by the successful collaborative artists, brothers Shan Zuo and Da Huang Zhou.   We’ll begin by entering Martin L. Bernstein’s studio, an extraordinary art work in itself.  Everywhere you look you’ll find strange and familiar objects, alluring textures, lights and jewels.  The artist also creates jewelry and art in more traditional formats.  Next, at Herb Migdoll’s studio, see large scale combinations of photography and painting before concluding with painters Jenny Learner and Barbette Loevy.

November 9                                    Julie Rotblatt-Amrany & Omri Amrany
Delve into sculpture on this visit to a studio complex.  We’ll start at the stunning gallery the artist couple founded in the historic army theater building in Fort Sheridan. On exhibition is work in diverse materials including wood, bronze, stone, glass and painting.  Then, see representational sculpture in the making as we tour Julie’s and Omri’s studios.  The two have had major commissions from around the world.  Locally, Omri Armany’s sculpture of Michael Jordan graces the United Center.

November 16                                                          Lori and Steve Kaufman
Find art everywhere in this large collection of a former gallery dealer.  The work ranges from African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian art to contemporary paintings by famous artists Adolph Gottlieb, Fernando Botero, Alex Katz and Roger Brown, James Havard, Ida Kohlmeyer and a twenty-three foot painting by Robert Natkin, to drawings by Picasso and Henry Moore, a Jim Dine print and a ceramic relief by Georges Braque as well as works by emerging artists.

November 30                                                          David Gista
Meet an energetic artist and art instructor who recently founded “The Art School” in Glencoe.  In David’s private studio, we’ll investigate his vibrant paintings that express both his lively personality and meditations on place and time.  We’ll find out why he moved from France to Chicago and how his recent exhibit “Stranger in a Strange Land” at Thomas Masters Gallery talks about this midlife move.  We’ll conclude with an exhibit in “Gallery G,” the space David created to show works by other artists.

December 7                                                                          Sue Lowenberg
Don’t miss this lively collection of Outsider and folk art in a beautiful Roscoe Village home.   Brightly colored walls showcase the paintings and objects.  Known as “The Pencil Lady,” Sue has designed furniture out of pencils to enhance the collection.  Her work has been featured on TV and in magazines.  We’ll see art by Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Mose Tolliver, Jake McCord, James Harold Jennings, William Dawson and more.  Paintings and sculptures are paired with folk art furnishings made with found objects like toothpicks, buttons and beads.  Then, in Sue’s studio, we’ll explore her inventive jewelry, furniture, picture frames and accessories.
