Making Memories: Quilts as Souvenirs                                                  Wednesday, January 31, 2018
Art Institute of Chicago
What works in fiber that may be lost in more traditional fine art media? In this presentation of 29 quilts, we’ll explore the way these textiles function as keepsakes and consider how their material fabrication mimics the construction of memory. The exhibit ranges from honoring individuals to depicting events to fantastical escape. Meet in the Modern Wing, Monroe St. entrance.

I Am You                                                                                                     Wednesday, February 7, 2018
Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago
In this exhibit curated from the MCA’s collection, we’ll investigate artworks that question how we relate to and shape our environments. Using very different materials and techniques, the artists of many nationalities all deal with very personal experiences to express the vastness of contemporary life. We’ll discuss work from recognized artists such as Francis Bacon, Felix Gonzalez Torres, Marisol and Shirin Neshat as well as younger artists, such as Jonathas de Andrade and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. Meet in the entrance at the corner of E. Pearson St. & Mies Van der Rohe Way.

Traversing the Past                                                                                  Wednesday, Feburary 14, 2018
Museum of Contemporary Photography
We’ll consider what we know, what we believe and what remains a mystery of the past in these potent works by three artists who are dealing with the complex relationship between personal and political histories. Examining family stories originating from World War II, the Qaddafi regime in Libya and the Croatia War of Independence, the artists transform the autobiographical into a multivalent lens through which to view a subject that cannot be pinned to a single narrative. Meet at 600 South Michigan Ave.

Fee:           Art Encounter members:  $30 per individual session, $75 for the series
