Adaptive Art Program at Keshet Gadol
This 10-week series of art workshops for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities was developed in partnership with local organization Keshet for participants in their Gadol program. The workshops combines creative field exploration of local sites such as the Skokie Sculpture Park and Chicago Botanic Gardens with hands-on projects that ask participants to respond to what they have seen and experienced.
With the belief that mentorship is a creative dialogue, this inter-generational program enables seniors and teens to mentor each other through the creation of art together. Students in high school are paired with older mentor artists and art enthusiasts, and over eight weeks they work together to make expressive artworks together. Following initial large group activities, pairs are formed, and each couple creates a shadow box reflecting their shared interests, origins, personal histories, and dreams for the future. Through the experience of seeing new perspectives in a non-traditional format, Linking Generations develops long-lasting friendships across generations and provides artists of all ages new approaches to creating and thinking about art.
