Woman Sweeping with Gold, Liliana Porter, SECRIST | BEACH
Visit two expansive West Town galleries with Joanna Pinsky to explore intriguing exhibitions based on personal and magical narratives. At SECRIST | BEACH, we’ll discuss The Strange Task featuring works on paper, sculpture, and video by New York-based artist Liliana Porter. For over six decades, the artist has incorporated endearing found objects, toys, and figurines in small-scale installations to investigate themes that reflect the human condition. Along with the solo exhibition, the gallery has curated UNREAL, an invitational survey looking at contemporary anxieties through surreal expressions of everyday life.
Next, we’ll visit Mariane Ibrahim Gallery to see Jennifer Rochlin’sThe Horizon Keeps Moving, a solo exhibition of large-scale ceramics and paintings depicting personal narratives. Having received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999, the Los Angeles-based artist draws from her memories and impressions of this city in ceramic vessels and images interweaving the horizon line above the lake, the river, and the city’s grand architecture along with its intimate spaces of bars, alleys, and porches.
